... Saying something like “expansions worth of content” means different things to everyone, and is nearly an impossible goal to meet expectation wise since everything expects something different, which is a big part of why marketing stepped away from that plan very quickly after asking us to use it when speaking to the press/fans. ...

To be sure, a lot has changed in the gaming industry since 2005/2006.  Games are often more expensive now than then, and the economic situation is quite a bit worse for a lot of people around the globe, meaning they are less likely to spend money on entertainment products at all.  Still, the laws of supply and demand dictate that, if the demand for the game was still high, the price wouldn't need to be adjusted much.  The lowered price could be seen as the explanation for why GW2 sales were strong through the holiday quarter and the dropped like a stone afterward.  That would suggest that player discontentment became an issue possibly as early as the latter part of 2012.  From my personal experience, that is indeed when most of the guilds I was in went inactive and my friends lists became full of people who no longer signed in... but that's just my experience, not enough to say much for certain.

What I was going at is that it seems like the 60 bucks price point (compared to a 30 bucks price point) gives them much more room to when it comes to prices, which is why we are seeing prices drop faster. Especially since so many of the games are sold digitally.
As for the reason why GW2 is reduced in price (disregarding the comparison with GW1), I agree: if I remember correctly, the NCSOFT earnings report mentioned specifically that the number of sales of boxes dropped.

I disagree.  There are many memorable things about shopping at Walmart.  Just, you know, not a lot of things that provoke positive memories (as such your analogy still works!).  I could be remembering wrongly, but I'm pretty sure the original Guild Wars didn't go on sale so often until after several new campaigns had been released.  I remember playing on my room-mates account for a long time waiting for it to go on sale (at the time I took issue with paying full price for just about any game... what can I say funds were more limited back then).  It does strike me as somewhat strange that GW2 has already been on sale quite a few times, and that the sale price has been something like a 40% markdown.  Even when they did that around X-mas it felt like a desperate move to me...

It might have to do with the fact that GW1 was out in a time when games were sold for some 30-40 bucks and now we have 60 bucks games.

The problem with GW2 is that while you will get your money's worth (for instance, even those of us that are constantly complaining about it most likely got a few hundred hours out of it), there's a decent potential to leave a sour after-taste. I mean, I got like 1/50th, maybe even 1/100th the hours I got out of GW2 from games such as Portal, yet I am always going to rate Portal higher than GW2. "It's not the size, it's what you do with it." ;)
GW2 is like the Walmart of games: you're going to get a lot for the price, it's just nothing memorable about it. And while this is decent for the first game, especially with the price drop (which is going to be pretty darn appealing once it goes on "Weekend-sale" for under 30 bucks), I can absolutely see this coming back and biting them in the ass once they release the expansion.
