From what I've been able to tell, there is a few Points of Interest needed for map completion inside Fort Trinity that you can't get without getting at least that far in the main story. Or you could find a friend who is about to go there to help you.
I liked the story for the most part. There were only some parts I didn't like and I didn't like how they did the deaths of most people. Though, losing your partner from your order is sad to me.

They fixed this around November or something like that. You can now zone into that area of Fort Trinity no matter what step you are on in the personal story.

Storylines before Claw Island were a bit uneven but overall I'm fairly happy with them.

Storyline after Claw Island is horribly dull for the most part. Liked the silly golem fight in Orr, but that was completely illogical as one of those golems could pretty much cleanse all of Orr. It feels like the entire point of this latter half of the personal story is to breed a deep hatred for Trahearne.

For 99% of PvE content in the game, melee > range.

For WvW, AoE ranged is superior overall because you can't melee at or from castle walls, and in general aoe from range is low risk high reward with the fairly disorganized zergs running around.

For sPvP, melee > range.

For high level (let's say >25, one can argue about which point melee starts becoming impossible though) fractals, pretty much the only exception to the PvE rule, ranged > melee because monster attacks at range tend to be easier to avoid. When getting hit by a TRASH MOB once has a good chance of taking atleast half of your health away, trying to stay in melee quickly becomes too much of a bother to be worth it.

I'd say something like this:

Shame the karma leggings mesh so badly with nearly all full body chest pieces. Might work better on male characters though.

Legs, boots: karma armor level 30-40 zones (Fields of Ruin, Lornar, Gendarran)
Hands: Chain (level 5) crafted, other minimal gloves work too
Helmet: Vigil
Shoulders: Splint (level 40) crafted, other minimal shoulders should work too
Chest: Honor of the Waves chest piece, no sleeves+somewhat appropriate look

I'd say that with current pve content (which tends to emphasize extremely large hits which passive stat defense is pretty much incapable of dealing with), it's mostly a waste to invest in defensive stats beyond what would bring you to around say ranger base (medium hp - medium armor). Having a bit of passive defense helps in trash fights, but for most fights the game really is forcing you to use active defenses if you want to survive.

Healing Power really is a waste for nearly everyone right now, the multipliers on most healing skills are so bad.
