From what you've said, I'd have to suggest trying an elementalist again.

Did you? Ever heard of ursan way? DoA with LB? required stones for UW?
The UW stones thing just a way to measure experience cooked up by the usual elitist pugs found in all games. It was not required for access and it was not hard to find a group via guild or less picky players. Plus this only happened early on in GW existence.
The lightbringer track could be quite easily completed quickly by turning in the books after doing nightfall. Even without the books it could be farmed up to a high level in literally a couple hours.
I guess I don't see how that compares to having to farm to afford buying a max weapon.,plus in gw1 I could be equipped for any possibly build by buying about 9 pieces of armor maximum. While in gw2, you, ya know... Can't.

That does of course depend on what kind of grind you are talking about.
In GW1 you had to grind power in order to join certain type of content (as in specific weapon setups and expensive runes not to mention the PvE-title grind that was more or less mandatory in order to do any of the harder stuff if you wanted to do it with a group).
In GW2 the grind comes down to cosmetics.

Whoever created Tybalt's character needs a promotion. He is easily the best part of an otherwise mediocre storyline. I don't hate it, but compared to GW1, it doesn't shine. The searing alone was better than anything found in GW2. Although, granted, presearing was my favourite part of all of GW.
