Wow. A lot of things are brought up here, too much to comment on.
While I don't agree with you on most points I do understand where you are comming from.
You are looking for things that the game simply does not provide. At that point there is nothing more to it then to move on to other games.
It's sad to see so many people disappointed with the game (even I am), but it's good to see you at least had fun with it.

I would like to point out a quote that to me seems to be at the heart of all the negative comments GW2 is getting.

A month and a half. That's all it took for me to complete everything and experience nearly everything, save for completing my legendary. For a $60 game, that's amazing. For an MMO, that's tradgic.

I've never been an MMO player. (I did play GW1 for 7 years, but I wouldn't call that an MMO at all.) So to me this statement is very strange.
What is expected from an MMO? Endless content? Surely that can't be the case.
For some reason a lot complains about GW2 are aimed at longevity of the game. So is longevity what makes a game an MMO?
I would think not, but it often seems to be the expectation that the MMO label brings with it.

If you ask me, Anet made a mistake to promote the game so hard to MMO players.
"If you are tired of MMO's you'll want to play our game. And if you never likes MMo's you'll definetely want to play our game"
(something along those lines was in the iconic GW2-manifest video)
Just like with GW1 they are trying to make a game for too many people. In GW1 it was trying to unite PvE players with PvP players. The result was mixed. How often were there complaint from PvP players that update x was favoring PvE (or the other way around) In the end they had to split most of the skills up. What makes a fun game for one group doens't make a fun game for the other. And a lot of players dropped from the game.
I fear the same is happening again. They try to make a game that appeal to both casual and hardcore player. The result is, again, mixed. But no just those 2 groups. You also have the older GW1 players that they are trying to please. In the end we end up with a game that hangs somewhere in the middle, but never really captures either group's interests.

I hope the game finds it's spot.
GW1 did, because it managed to carve out it's own little niche.
Let's hope the same can happen with GW2.

In Topic: Would you consider this a successful headstart/launch?

The day isn't over yet.

Up until when I stopped to eat (+/- 11:30 Brussels time) I was able to play several hours.
After that everything got disconnected and I can't even start up the client anymore.

I would wait until the end of the day to pass any judgement.
If they'll be able to fix the problems by then: it has been a great success.
If they don't: it was passable, but not great.

I tend to agree with OP.
I have been able to do something. Pick a server, create some characters, play a few hours. More then I was expecting to be able to do today really.

On the other hand. There have been numerous stresstests. One could ask what the point of those were if loginservers clearly aren't coping with the stress :)

But whatever. It'll get sorted out eventually.
I have 2 weeks off from work so no rush for me :D

You guys seriously expected a smooth launch? Plus, this isn't even launch.

Actually it has gone better then I expected.
I have actually been able to play a few hours :D

I'm really taking my time looking around and taking in the scenery.
Something I haven't done in BWE's or stresstests since then I was on a constant content-MORE-CONTENT-rampage :D

also spent the better part of an hour in character creation :P
