But here's the thing: you don't have to get it (unless you care about high level fractals). Literally everything but high level versions of fractals can be done without best in slot. You can say that they might change that in the future, but there isn't enough concrete evidence for that to be certain.
Here's the thing: I don't care that you don't 100% need it for certain parts of the game (and given the stat increase it does provide, it's hard to argue that it doesn't provide a significant advantage over exotics, which does affect competitive PvE and does affect the difficulty of general PvE content). I care that we, as customers, were misled as to the nature of the game we were buying. I care that the wants of an entirely different audience - the gear-chasing crowd - were built irrevocably into the fabric of a game that was hailed as being for everyone who hated that type of game.
Getting to 80 is already a slow, grindy process. Getting to 80 and getting max stat gear so that I can focus on playing the game and only having skill/build diversity as progression has now become completely out of my range of play. And as I said, I really don't have that blind trust in Anet that there will never be another bone thrown to the gear-chasing crowd (logic dictates that they are being prioritised, so there will be more content to suit them).
You're too fixated on evidence, mate. I'm looking at the state of the game, and I'm seeing patterns, and I'm seeing likely directions of game development based on past decisions and reversals of design principles. Believe me, when Anet prove me wrong, I'll be a happy bunny, but they have to earn the benefit of the doubt back. They don't get it for free any more, not from this misled customer.
