#1750272 are you going to jump ship?

Oh look, another thread stating their profession is broken.

I think I've seen a thread like this for each and every profession which could only mean one thing... If everything is broken then *gasp* that must mean everything is balanced!!

#1714210 2 Weeks Til Launch... What's Your Leveling Strategy?

There is such a negative stigma attached to wanting to level up fast on this board. Someone wants to talk about leveling quickly and efficiently and dozens of people pounce on them with "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!" :D

There are very legitimate reasons for that.

1. Leveling up optimally and leveling up in an entertaining/diverse fashion are often at odds with one another. If your goal is to push experience all the time, "fun" becomes a secondary consideration. There are a few extreme achievement focused personalities who enjoy the process of leveling fast all by itself, but they are rare. This is evident in how many people moan about all the "work" they had to do to level up.

2. Content locusting is a serious problem in a launch MMO. Not for the MMO so much, but for the locusts. The faster you evaporate the existing content, the faster you are left with absolutely nothing to do. This is when complaints about end game and repetition set in, and people hate reading complaints. Now, I think content locusts are inevitable, and I think it behooves a modern MMO to not only launch with decent content depth but also with some kind of perpetual end game activity like WvWvW to keep people occupied while you squeeze out expansions and content patches. But I also think content locusts are their own worst enemy.

3. The people who ride at the crest of "the pack" tend to be...uh...not the kind of people I find myself wanting to associate with as I get older. They tend to be extreme power gamers with extreme power gaming mentalities, which can be obnoxious in best case scenarios and approach outright personality disorders in worst case scenarios. I had many years of their company when I was younger and it's worn me out.

4. There's just not much of a "race" any more. Post WoW the time to level to max has gotten shorter and shorter with each successive generation, so your time "at the top" has gotten shorter and shorter. In EQ, it could take a new player a YEAR to get to cap with all the xp loss on death and hell levels. Now you have people doing it in 2-3 days. As GW2 aggressively plateaus, not only in terms of level but also in terms of gear, what are you buying yourself? A extra week of a mild power advantage in WvWvW? First guy to get an alternate armor skin? Being first past the post has never seemed so worthless.

Can I vote for the a 3rd option and go for stats?
I wont worry about what something looks like until lvl 80.
And even then I wouldn't invest much time/effort/gold for particular looks.
You're playing the wrong game.

#1672954 Remind me again why not gear based?

Just had a brain fart and don't remember the advantages of moving away from being gear based MMO (for only PVE).

The way I see it now, GW2 is 'looks' based, while relying on skill instead of gear stats + skill. So there is no gear treadmill...but...there will be a 'looks' treadmill. I am confused. Someone else explain please.
