#2203197 ArenaNet ceases Guild Wars 1 live development, automates game

Posted Grey on 17 May 2013 - 10:29 PM

The last day dawns on the Kingdom of Ascalon. It arrives with no fanfare, no tolling of alarms. Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze. People carry on with their daily lives, unaware that in a short while… everything they have ever known will come to an end.

#2199410 How well do you think the GW2 story compares to the GW1 story?

Let's be fair here though, what are we comparing it too exactly?

Prophecies? If we put all the fan love aside, the story wasn't really that great and got extremely tiring once you do it with one character.
Factions? I personally liked it, it was short and fun although I know that's not a popular opinion. I just liked the transition from the peaceful Shing Jea island into the corrupted cityscapes and finally into the Kurzick and Luxon lands.
Nightfall? Ok yeah GW2 sucked compared to this one. Nightfall had an intriguing storyline and got even more so interesting when you entered the shadow realm (or w/e it was called)
Eye of the North? I guess

Prophecies had one of the best stories imo. It felt like some grand quest. You were important as the character. In guild wars 2 you are just Traehearne's sidekick at best. GW2 does not outshine GW1 in the slightest. Guild wars 1 was superior in plot, characters, endgame, and social activity imo. Sorrow's Furnace was released not long after the initial release and it was a PERMANENT addition. I still play guild wars 2 and still enjoy it but it is lackluster in comparison to guild wars 1.

#2195303 Legendary let down?

Posted ObbiShadowdragon on 25 April 2013 - 01:27 AM

I know good things come in time and this has possibly been posted about but i havnt seen anything about it yet. Anyway when it comes to legendary weapons its not an easy road to travel obtaining one atleast for myself anyway but what my issue/let down is, is that there is only one legendary weapon of each weapon type. I mean really? the only Legendary that has more then one is greatsword and they all look pretty much the same with maybe alittle colour veriation? Theres no choice for people wanting to stand out if  they do manage to somehow obtain a precursor (which is a joke/insane luck) and get all the rediculous requirments. I know it may sound unreasonable to some but why not have a range of say legendary weapon types, each with there own background story etc. Like a mighty hammer from the far shiver peaks, another that was once weilded by a great dwarven hero or king. Is it really too much to ask to add some meaning to legendarys to atleast make the obseen requirments alittle easier to stomach?

Any views are welcome and appreciated but please dont turn this into a troll fest thanks.

#2191900 New Gem Store Items: Flame & Frost Dye Packs and Molten Alliance Mining Pick

I REALLY like the idea of an unlimited mining pick.
The problems though:
1. its price - based on the reddit calculations, we are talking about 50k minings before the unlimited one starts making sense
2. it being character-bound - it would need to be account-bound

But give me an unlimited pick, with no animation, that is account-bound for some 200 gems and I am buying them for all my characters. That would be an amazing item.

this seriously. $10 for a mining pick that's character bound? Who the * is making up their prices? Even for a free to play game that's ridic. I'd say $3-5 bucks for an entire set that is account bound at the very least. It'd be better if we could get multiple copies, but yeah.

#2186355 Survey: Guild Wars 2, the revolutionary MMO?

When you get old and graduate school and work and pay bills and other such nonsense people over 30 do, it is really hard to enjoy a typical MMO.

This.
Over the past decade, around the time of EQ, EQ2, Shadowbane, Darkfall, Vanguard, WoW, Warhammer etc, gamers have been growing up. To begin with the main age range of a gamer back in the EQ and early WoW days was fairly young.
Youngsters are still interested in gaming, even moreso in fact... but so are the people who used to be the youth gaming scene.
So now companies have to cater for people with loads of time on their hands, and people like us who have to work for a living.

GW2 works very well for me in that I can get 90% of the reward a 17 year old kid with no job can get. I like that the majority of the reward is front loaded in the form of dailies.

#2186354 Super Adventure Box Always-Online

Am I seriously reading this?  It's an MMO, it needs to be online due to the volume of information going through it.

What are you talking about?

Super adventure box is the new game created by Arenanet with cutting edge graphics which is being developed for their exculsive console which is totally gonna beat Sega and Nintendo.

What's an MMO anyways?

Except AngryJoe that, for God knows what reason, gave it the first place in the top ten games of 2012. Its extremely funny because he was always so excited about it, but I strongly doubt that he even bought the game. Because AJ is more cynical than TB, and, if he doesnt get that the game is bad, its kinda sad.
The game is not bad. You find it bad. Big difference there. I think the reason he gave it first place was not only because he liked the game - I'm sure he subjectively had more fun with other games on his list - but because he felt that it offered the best value for money out of all his top games for the year. AJ is not an MMO player, he's stated it many times, neither is he a GW1 fan (I think), so his criteria is different to that of a hardcore MMOer or a GW1 nostalgic.

#2173900 Anyone else think the agro in this game is a complete joke?

Posted Trei on 03 March 2013 - 03:49 AM

I think "aggro" is a joke in games with taunt mechanics.

Is your group so lacking in team work that they cannot help you with your boss aggro without depending on taunts?

Do they not know when to use chill, protection, push/pull, cripple, weakness, heals... ?

#2171765 Guild Missions!

View PostShiren, on 27 February 2013 - 05:59 AM, said:

No, your example is ridiculous and has very little in common with a guild. This is a game not a relationship.

Before this update it didn't matter what size my guild was, the bonuses provided by having a larger guild were very easy to ignore, choosing to be in a smaller guild came at a very small sacrifice. Now ArenaNet has made the primary method of acquiring some of the best rewards in the game require resources gathered by guild events, but they've placed the entry level for these guild events so high, small guilds can't compete with large guilds.

Now small guilds can't offer what big guilds can. In the past, this wasn't a big deal - by being in a small guild you missed out on occasional  15% karma or similair bonuses. Most people can easily ignore those things. Now you are missing out on a large chunk of the guild mission system and the most viable path to ascended accessories. ArenaNet has done this by design with no consideration to small guilds. You have a dramatic advantage over smaller guilds when you are able to offer more content and rewards to them simply because you are bigger and have more influence.

Wanting to participate in the new content and have a good chance at accessing the new rewards doesn't make you a fair weather player. Even if they had stayed, they are in a guild which is going to access this content at a much slower pace - weeks away from doing any of it.

You know why it's ArenaNet's fault? Because they designed a guild content and reward system which is almost completely unusable by the majority of small guilds at a pace which comes remotely close. It dramatically favours the bigger guilds and the rewards are highly desirable. You can only be in four guilds and many guilds (especially the big ones wanting to pump out influence) have stict repping requirements. The design of this system is undeniably harmful to small guilds regardless of how you contest my anecdotal experience with it.

It's not an issue of whether your guild has fair weather players in the first place, it's the fact that ArenaNet has created a system which forces them to make a choice at all.

A guild is like a relationship. Or rather, you should have a relationship with your guild. I know every single person in mine. I know their names. What they do for a living. What their hobbies are. What kind of things they like to do in the game. I also build my guild to what they want because we don't just do one thing.

If people leave your guild, then they never cared for your guild and you never truly knew them at all. You can't offer them greener pastures and have never really aimed to, so they leave yours and join another. After all, if you did make the effort, you'd have a lot more loyal people and people wouldn't just up and leave in a game where you can actually have multiple guilds.

Is the problem with the rest of the game or just you?

#2160915 Warrior Builds: Success and Failure

Posted ObscureThreat on 08 February 2013 - 08:05 PM

I like how the content of this thread is basically, don't try anything other than my "optimal build" and don't play a game in the way you want. Seriously if the OP is so concerned with others dragging him down, why doesn't he just stick with his guild/friends and not pug. Quite an easy solution. Entire thread really is a waste of time.

You have a place in the game, open world PvE and WvW.  Heck you could form your own ultra-casual dungeon groups and have a blast. But don't join groups for people who are interested in doing things quickly or efficiently, because you would be a drag.
And who are you to tell him where his place is? Some kind of oracle that is never wrong? People who are interested in doing things quickly or efficiently run in organized guild groups, not PUGs. PUGs are open to everyone.

#2160672 Warrior Builds: Success and Failure

Posted The_Blades on 08 February 2013 - 10:59 AM

it so much happens that i have joined such groups with my own build, which i'msure is far from efficient. full knights i think, no runes on my warrior yet, 2 exotic acessories if i recall. And it went smoothly. All the proof i have for it is my word, so you can choose to believe or dismiss it since you dont know me.

The point is, optimal build is a fake premise, you either are good enough at playing your character or you're a liability, and thats all that matters, not numbers (ofcourse, exotics make a diference and better gear in general).

#2160659 Warrior Builds: Success and Failure

Posted The_Blades on 08 February 2013 - 10:32 AM

so... if i have fun (you know... that little thing games are supposed to provide) playing in a certain way, lets say full carrion with a mace and warhorn (not even sure if it even makes sense), i should just stop having fun with that build, because someone else says the build is suboptimal, and then i have no place in the game

Because everyone knows: a game is just like real life, its not suposed to be fun, you have to be effective and get more overrated pixels than the guy standing next to you., thats all that matters. (im not saying real life is not fun, some are, others arent)

So to hell with math and stupid formulas to get x more damage. play the game and have fun. otherwise you really are doing it wong. And i realize some people have fun doing this math and thinking they're the next best thing. thats ok.

#2164060 Ecto's, ecto's, ecto's....

Posted ShezuTsukai on 14 February 2013 - 05:26 PM

Anet needs to add ectos to a creature's drop. GW1 ectos were the only reason to go to the UW more than once.

Speaking of UW, why do we see old UW creatures and they no longer drop ectos? I'd go do the swamp event a lot more if the Aatxes dropped what they used to drop.

And yes it is illogical for every exotic and higher item to require a boat load of ectos when we can only get them from items.

#2163677 Engineer... Waste of a class?

Posted armoured bearshark on 13 February 2013 - 09:51 PM

engineer is the most unpredictable class in pvp and its hard to get caught out of position as one in pve. It has strong defensive abilities, repositioning, is moderately tanky, boasts high range, high cc, extremely fast condition applications, extremely fast condition removals, a large variety of combo fields, many blast finishers, the best stun breaker in the game, the most on-crit effects in the game. I can do things on my engineer that make my guardian and my necro cry. I really don't get what OP is talking about.
