Incredibly ordinary?

14 February 2013 - 02:28 AM

I really like GW2.  Kudos to the game designers and how they took a bold step to do something different.  I think the story line mechanic, art style, dynamic events and "twitch" combat making it one of the most promising MMOs I have played (I have played quite a few).  I have played hybrids in almost all games and hate "cookie cutter" builds and being pigeonholed.  This game offered all that and then some.

Be careful what you wish for.

If you spec toughness and vitality, who is the best tank?

If you spec glass cannon, who is the best DPS?

If you spec balance, who is the best hybrid?

If you spec healing, who is the best healer?

The nature of these questions is very subjective; I get that.  Many will argue my choices and many won't agree on the answers.  My concern is the classes that are not on this list.  Do those classes excel in PVE over others on this list?  Do those classes excel in PvP/WvW over others on this list?  In my opinion, they don't, which creates a lot of imbalance.

Point is; I think the premise of this non-role specific archetype is to allow anyone to fulfill any role.  I don't think that is the reality.  In fact, the reason I even made this post is that it isn't even close.

I love the flexibility and non-concrete specs and roles.  But don't imply that everyone can tank when they can't.  Everyone can heal when they can't.  So everyone is a hybrid, typically ranged or glass cannon, which leads to more homogenization of the classes, not less.  This is not a "what is viable" thread, as that is highly debatable.  This is about the core differentiation between this game and the other vanilla MMOs and whether or it is helping the game grow or killing it.

What say you?

Does Phantasmal strength and empowered illusions stack?

29 January 2013 - 11:56 PM

Is it +15% for clones and +15% and +15% (total of 30%) for phantasms?

If so, is this a static increase or does it scale with mesmer's stats?  I am not sure how to word that, so an poor example would be:

iwarlock base damage is 100, plus these two traits = 130 plus Mesmer stats

iwarlock base damage is 100, plus Mesmer stats, plus 30%.

Anyone tried it?

Elixir gun/Flamethrower?

23 January 2013 - 03:33 PM

New engy here and after looking at some of these forums and posts, I have a few questions.  I like the idea of the elixir gun (I am level 21 now), but as someone pointed out, it doesn't do a lot of direct damage and works ok for AOE.  I figure, like many of you have said, that you really need traits to maximize the DPS.

So I was wondering for those of you who use a EG as the main kit if:
  • What you switched to (flamethrower/rifle/nades etc).  What has good synergy?
  • How did you trait?
  • What skills do you use?
  • Can you do decent DPS and support at the same time?
I will solo some, eventually play in groups and dungeons a lot and hope to attain a good hybrid (decent DPS, AOE, heals and buffs for group).

Not the best, or top the charts, but decent and "viable".  Hate that word.

Anyways, your feedback is appreciated!

Scepter and power or precision?

26 November 2012 - 04:55 PM

New necro here, level 12 to be exact.  I have been reading these forums for awhile now looking for a build to suit me (once I get to max level), and while many of them are close, nothing seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

For example: I love the dagger idea and being a cloth melee DPS and all of that, but honestly I suck at melee in this game for whatever reason.  So I am stuck with ranged goodness and while the axes seem decent and the staff offers utlity and whatnot, so far the scepter has been my favorite.  With one little issue; I would prefer to kill something quickly as opposed to letting the conditions eat away at them.  This is subject to change, but all of my toons have been crit %/crit  damage based or power based.

Lastly; I am not looking for top DPS by any means.  I am looking for the best DPS while bringing some tools/healing and whatnot to my group.  I will probably focus primarily on PVE with this toon and sprinkle in some WvW.  For PvP, I understand scepter probably isn't ideal.

So finally here are my questions:
  • Anybody run power or precision with Scepter and use the conditions as gravy?
  • Does the scepter not scale well?
  • Can the scepter #3 skill hit hard with the right traits and is it power based?  Seems like on boss fights that this would be ideal.
  • What would be a good offhand?
  • Does the trait that siphons health with crits work well with scepter?

Any feedback (constructive) is appreciated.  Not looking for you to develop something for me, just curious if anyone is or has done anything similar and what the results where.  Thanks!

Blood fiend -patch notes?

19 November 2012 - 10:28 PM

Summon Blood Fiend: The Blood Fiend’s survivability has been increased, and its attack now heals the necromancer for 200% of its previous heal.

Anyone noticed this?  I found the patch notes in the pvp forum, but was curious that if this was true, was the effects (healing and survivability) noticeable?
