#2089335 Perfect example, terrible reward for decent effort

All garbage loot. (I just tallied my rewards up.. if I sold on the TP, I'd net 5silver.)
Did you do the content to get the reward, or was the reward just something that you happened to get as you played the game?

Think carefully about that question.

So, a Vial of Condensed Mists Essence dropped for me today.  My first thought was "Awesome! I can make an ascended item!"

...until I looked closer at the mat cost.  Potent bloods are almost 25 silver each and I need 250 of them.  And that's before even counting the ectos.

Now, to give you some background, I don't get a ton of playtime.  Between my family and my job, I don't get to put in nearly as many hours as I was able to do back in my college years, but that's why I came to GW2.  I played GW1 back in the day and I was really looking forward to a game where I can jump in and be judged by how well I played, not how long I played.

After hearing ArenaNet's manifesto on the game, I thought that's what I would find.

And it was.

Until this latest patch.

I know to a lot of other people, this mat cost is nothing, but it's sad that it feels like I can't play MMOs and still be competitive anymore.
Competitive?

You were never competitive bro.

I'm still in exotics, I don't have a legendary, but you know what? I don't care. Because I don't need those.

What I 'believed in' was the original promise. ArenaNet has explained in very patronising and not at all uncertain terms that the old promise is dead. What else is there to believe in, in regards to this game?

Seriously, can you not read your own post and see how absurdly melodramatic that sounds? If you're going to leave, leave. We simply don't need a wall of text.

They added one tier of gear between a tier that takes hours to get, and a tier that takes months to get. A "gear treadmill," by definition, is a very granular tier increase every major update ad infinitum. There is absolutely no reason to believe Anet plans to add another tier between Ascended and Legendary at this point. This all seems to boil down to, "based on my own personal anxieties they're going to <insert accusation here>, just you watch!"

I love the game, am a staunch supporter and who cares about the Ascended armor.  I think it's really petty to base a game around one set of items that may or may not be of use anywhere but a dungeon.  Come on people.  You have no idea if ANet is going to carry this outside the dungeon and put agony in the level 80 PvE areas.  It's for a bloody dungeon that you don't even have to enter.
^

Tbh I find this whole situation hilarious, to see how the tables turned so much.

It's not that bad people, really! Cheer up.

3 weeks ago, it was the universal trend to disregard any negative feedback towards ANet and their amazing game, whether it was valid criticism or just pointless ranting. Those posts would commonly be treated as trash, and the posters would be called anywhere from "whiners" to "wow fanboys". They were also promptly asked to leave this game because "this is no wow clone and we don't need people like you in here", or the famous "no one will miss you".

Now, it looks like there's no longer the need to remind anyone of how different this game is, or how there's no supposed "carrot on a stick". It looks like GW2 wasn't the best thing ever.

It's a sad realization, I know, I've been through that before but I'm over it now.

I wonder though...

Are the Ascended items enough of a reason to throw away everything you believed in? the stats aren't so much better compared to exotics FYI.

Everything else worth complaining about has already been here from the start. The RNG factor (final karka event), the gem shop unfairness, the poor customer service, the lagging, the lack of content, etc.

However, everytime that someone complained about any of that, it was immediately frowned upon and / or laughed at.

I sense a strong sense of entitlement nowadays, 90% of the latest threads are complaining about something, and this time it doesn't seem that the "whiners" are the ones starting them.

And now finally, when some end game content makes its way to GW2, the forums explode in rage, as if those ascended items were enough to ruin this perfect game you've been playing all this time.

So what gives? This game has only 3 months, after all.  I'm amazed at how quickly the general opinion about GW2 has changed over the last week. Just know that y'all are overreacting just as badly as the people who you laughed at back then.

PS: I don't hate gw2, I just know that it's not perfect, and pointing some of its flaws has gone to ridiculous extents throughout these 3 months (I remember having to justify to 2-3 people WHY did I give 8/10 to GW2)

#2057993 MMORPG: Interview with Colin Johanson

Hugely disappointed to hear that they don't have someone currently working on a better LFG tool. This should be a major priority and it's only going to get worse as time going on. I don't understand how they don't see this as important. I certainly rather have a better LFG tool than some little island.

Also disappointed that they didn't seem to learn anything from the Halloween event and all the frustration people faced. This interview made it clear that they have their own agenda and don't listen to the fans as much as I thought/hoped. Which, it's their game, so they can do what they want. I just wish we had a little more impact on some of their decisions, but it sounds like Wintersday will be just as frustrating.

They also didn't address bots which is a huge issues. I guess overall, I'm disappointed that Colin seems to think these and other issues are fine as they go ahead and add all these new things to the game without fixing major issues which should be their main priority. I know they have different teams but the issues in the game should be an "all hands on deck" kind of thing.

As far as I'm concerned, their Nov "event" should be solving major game issues and not some silly little island.

And yet you would probably whine just as much ff they update game and only had fixes to these "major" game issues.
There are not many (if any?) major game issues at the moment, and even if there were, they have different teams working on them.
They can't stop development just because some people think that they should only focus on fixing massive imaginary problems.

But it's pretty useless. It doesn't even let you state what you're LFG for... or what you need in the party etc...

I'm sure 50% of the players online are LFG for something at any given time, but for what, who knows.

I didn't say it was useful. Just that it does in fact exist.
If people said "I wish Anet would fix the LFG tool/Implement useful features in the LFG tool" then  wouldn't be annoyed. :D

Honestly I don't think most casual gamers would like this game.  But maybe my definition of casual gamers is different from yours.  My definition of casual gamers are gamers that don't need the game to get much more complex than Angry Birds.

*sigh* really?  Why do people try to associate casual with bad or lazy or only plays silly apps instead of real games?  How about this.  I have a wife (who plays GW2), 4 kids, and a job.  I have been playing video games of some sort for about 26 years.  At some points in my life I could play hours on end, now I have responsibilities.  I am not a bad gamer, I just have a life outside of games.  A casual gamer is somebody who plays games, but cannot do it as a life.

That is actually the way games are going more and more.  The average game is now in their 30s.  As those of use that grew up on video games age, the gaming industry is going to have to mature to give us what we want play.

wow. . .i had no idea. . . thank you for the heads up

I wouldn't necessarily go by what people are saying here... the smart move would be to check them out for yourself and make your own judgement.

I've had zero trouble with the official forums... though I'm not posting on either forum very often (too busy playing, usually).  People complaining about over-moderation aren't giving a complete picture... ANet isn't arbitrarily deleting/locking threads that are critical of the game... they're deleting/locking threads that violate the TOS.  Plenty of people have been able to write very critical, and constructive posts about the issues they have with the game or with decisions ANet has made for the game.  They just manage to do it without also devolving into doing stupid things like referring to the ANet staff as incompetent, idiots, morons, thieves, scammers, liars, etc.

People who can't keep a civil tongue and present their point without resorting to attacks on the company and staff, they find their threads being poofed.  As they should.

People who just want to whine and get a bunch of people to agree with them find their threads poofed.  As they should.

People who just want to spout wild conspiracy theories and rants find their threads poofed.  As they should.

Everyone else seems to manage posting without sanctions just fine.

Wait what?
Which items can you get from the shop to bypass grinding several days?

Just because you think you "need" to use the store does not make it true.
I have played daily since head-start and have yet to find a single situation where I needed to use the store.

Why would the game die?
The vast majority of player have nothing against the store, nor most of the other stuff.

Completely concur.

People who say a game is doomed to fail really mean for them.  They just like to feel they are part of the game's main stream.

I too have been playing since the pre-release head start.  I have also been playing MMOs since 1999.  I do not share the OPs opinions what so ever.

It is funny how this threads whole argument is based on..
"Anet wants to force people to use money on the cash shop, its bad business!".
if this were true, you would not be able to use game gold to get gems to obtain these things.
Stop crying that you are not getting something for nothing.  Yes there is a general degree of difficulty, quit being lazy or pay up.

This is not a cash centered event.
There is hidden events, New item drops, new crafting recipes, haunted doors dropping mobs, costume brawl, and even more to come.
Just because you have centered your wants on cash shop items and what comes outa black lions chest, doesn't make it a cash shop centered event.

I have never seen people complain so much that a business actually creates incentive for people to buy their products especially when its completely optional to spend real money....  If you don't like it there is a uninstall button.

#2014579 Halloween! "Shadow of the Mad King!"

Update: 10/18/2012

ArenaNet has provided some new information on the update that's set to arrive on the 22nd! Are you ready for the return of the Mad King?

Quote

500 years ago, a tyrannical Krytan king was slain by his own people, those who had suffered greatly during his reign of lunacy. It is said that this king’s body was chopped into pieces, and his spirit was banished to the Underworld, but that he can return to the mortal realm for just one day a year: on Halloween.

Of course, that’s just an old folktale. Isn’t it?

It’s been 250 years since the last alleged sighting of Mad King Thorn’s spirit, and today, Halloween is safely celebrated by children (and merchants) all across Tyria.

But! Strange energies are rising under the autumn moon. Is there perhaps some truth to the old stories? Do you dare to find out what’s really going on?

All kinds of tricks and treats are coming to the Gem Store this Halloween. Costumes that grant spooky skills, tonics that transform you into ghouls and ghosts, creepy crawly minis to follow you around. And don’t forget to pick up your free devil horns before they disappear!

Posted Image

The Black Lion Chest is getting a spooky upgrade for Halloween. Between October 23 and November 5 each Black Lion Chest you open has a chance to give you one of six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins!

Also, you'll be happy to know that ArenaNet has added a spooky new wallpaper to remind you of the upcoming festivities. Most of the activities' details haven' been given out yet, so you have to check back on the 22nd, 26th, 28th, and of course, the 31st, to find out more.

On October 22nd, the Mad King comes...

Quote

Shadow of the Mad King
Halloween has a long history in Tyria, and in times past was always marked by the spirit of Mad King Thorn cavorting among the people unleashing his own brand of insanity. However, it’s been over 250 years since he was last seen, and for most people he is merely a figure of folklore. Despite this, rumors persist among the populace that something wicked this way comes.

Shadow of the Mad King is the first major game release for Guild Wars 2 and will go live on October 22. This new game update will include a number of new features for all of our players to enjoy, new content to explore and see, and a week-long Halloween event.
Prepare yourself for:
  • New mini-games, new dynamic events, and more
  • An epic adventure in four acts starting October 22 and running until October 31
  • Evon Gnashblade has stocked all new items at the Black Lion Trading Company, including Halloween costumes and new transforms that will allow you to play Costume Brawl
  • Paid tournaments will be available for competitive, five-person teams
  • new events, jumping puzzles, bosses, mini-dungeons, and achievements
