Wait for the new lineups in Q1 2013, even if you wont like them, the current series prices will drop dramatically.
Unless you just have to get one RIGHT NOW, in which case, AMD is no go, so focus on the i series of intel, preferably i5 since they offer a good bang for your buck.
I myself would hold off and see the new offerings first.
Edit: nevermind, since you only want to upgrade the CPu, and the II series run on the AM3 socket, you're out of luck. Save up instead, it really isnt worth getting the ancient architectures anymore.
You'll be kicking yourself in the balls if you do.
