I think a "better" solution, and by better I mean "more realistic", would be a gem store item that allows you to "re-bind" the item to any character you own. And while the same "problems" would come into play with this system, it would require people to spend gems each and every time they wanted to transfer an item... which I think Areanet would just... well, love.

One possible solution to this that I have thought of was a cash shop item that you apply to a piece of soulbound gear on character A and it becomes account bound. You can then transfer your gear through the bank to character B and re-equip, making the item soulbound to character B.
Once the piece is equipped on another char again, it's soulbound again.
Join a PvE active guild and participate in activities like orichalcum-/omnomberry runs, dungeons or jumping puzzles
easier to find a party and usually smoother than playing with pugs/strangers all the time
Once you get the hang of the mesmer's real potential through experimenting, exploring builds and traits, you'll never want to play something else. At least that's how it is for me.
If you want to try another class, maybe you'll like necro (a WOW-effect on pvp/wvw, when suddenly all the boons are corrupted and you spread the conditions with epidemic as an aoe)
You can also maybe play thief. With its stealth and escape techniques it's fun to play. But please do yourself the favor and don't play a regular glasscannon with backstab in pvp like so many thieves. it has much more potential
