#2187456 Taking the R out of RPG

If this game is so successful where's all the new contract developer hires and new game content? Go look at NCsofts last two quarterly reports and claim this game is doing so well again. It saw the usual release-month bump numbers, and then dropped like a rock. Just like this game did in player population.

That's why there's no planned expansions when normally this is the prime time for that announcement. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked to hear this game go F2P before its second birthday. Its already gemstore strapped and most new content release have been all about the gemstore. When the digital copy sales flat-line, they'll discount the game down to 20 bucks, and then when that flat-lines out as well they'll annouce its going to F2P, while they align their focuses on the next project while claiming that support will remain for a year or two to come.

GW2 sold almost half the copies GW1 did in only 5 months, and GW1 isn't F2P even after 7.5 years, I doubt they will let GW2 go F2P.

Ah it's so easy to sweep the point he was making under the rug with a sarcastic comment, eh?

How do you make a game for people that both like and hate a gear treadmill?

Ask GW2, because that is one of many completely opposite camps they are trying to develop for. The end result? A craptastic mixture of terrible mechanics that don't really make either side happy. That is the problem with trying to make everyone happy - not everyone agrees on everything and you end up with a product that is much worse than if you just stick to a set of principles in your game regardless of whether you piss some people off.

The problem with your theory is that GW2 is considered a critically and commercially successful game.   Yeah sure, you seem to be obsessed with complaining about the game, but no one cares anymore.  GW2 is not a craptastic game, it's actually a successful game.  Maybe you need to learn the difference between failure and success.

#2185603 Survey: Guild Wars 2, the revolutionary MMO?

Posted Lunacy Polish on 29 March 2013 - 06:06 PM

When you get old and graduate school and work and pay bills and other such nonsense people over 30 do, it is really hard to enjoy a typical MMO.

GW2 works for me for that reason.  My younger self would not have liked it.  I agree it is something of a condensed experience but that is perfect tor me.  There is really not another MMO I can play that lets me be as competitive as this one because /age just does not matter.

To be honest I so not expect the traditional MMO junkie who places a higher premium on games occupying his time to like it.  Ten years ago I would have burned through this thing in 6 weeks.  But old fart me loves it despite its warts.

A great game with one of the worst, most toxic fanbases you've ever seen.

#2158099 When will GW2 get real PvP?

Posted Dabrixmgp on 04 February 2013 - 10:35 PM

Please dont tell me you think WoW style arena is "real" PvP.  If anything "real" PvP is WvW.  When people used to go to war they captured territory and the castles and keeps and also supply depots and resources that came with it.  How the hell does it not get more real than that?

Can someone explain the meta game from gw1? I got bored with it after a few hours and never experienced pvp.

The biggest complaint I hear is about the weapon-determines-skillset design. Personally, I think its an awesome way to support reactive gameplay. In other mmos where a given player might have any of 100 skills in use, gameplay devolves into rotation spamming and guessing. In GW2 the only limit to how well i can recognized and react is my own cognitive ceiling.

Personally, I think its a brilliantly focused design.

If 10 skills aren't enough, you're playing the wrong class.

Name me a one team set up that uses more coordination and team work that GW1's widely known HA Ranger Spike which necessarily wasn't the hardest "way" to play.
That's right, there aren't any.

How would you know any better if people gave you 5 examples? Are you on a top team? Probably not. So your question is irrelevant, as you're likely unequipped to understand or accept any response anyhow. Not to mention your obvious bias.

It's true though, pretty much the entire GW1 PvP community is disgusted with GW2 PvP. Maybe not the casuals, but the people that played GvG and Tombs on a decent level are.
Enjoy reading trough these forums: http://www.teamquitt...wforum.php?f=55

And saying "if you don't like it, just go away" isn't a really mature thing to say.
People paid money for GW2, and expect to have good fun with it.
I played GW1 for 7 years, over 2 accounts with all expansions. (14000 hours spread over them)
GW2 I played for 1 month, and that's it... I already left for other games.

When you play and loved a game for such a long time, and it's followup turns into such a pile of dogshit... it does something to you.
It angers me, and I am allowed to express that here. "if you don't like that, go away".

Sorry charlie, this is Guild Wars 2, not Guild Wars 1. If you cannot accept that this game is not Guild Wars 1 2.0, that is your problem, and no amount of asserting that this games pvp is "shit" and then saying that so and so amount of people also nut hugging nostalgia and preference from a past games is gonna make a difference. Saying you paid money for it and expect to have "good fun" is also a load of entitled bullshit. Fun is subjective, and you stamping your feet that it doesn't cater to the particular preferences of you and yours is laughable. Things aren't going to change too much, if you can't handle it, why not show how mature you supposedly are and either quit and shut up with all the self-righteous, entitled complaining, or go to the official forums where the devs are much more likely to read what you have to say and beat your dead horse there.

Somehow I get the feeling the loud minority is bitching about GW2 PvP because they can't handle it. It's definitely harder in terms of control, because in GW1 all you had to do is click to move or click a healthbar and use the other hand to control the skillbar that only had 8 skills. Not hard to sit back and watch the redbars of your favorite henchies and upkeep their health in Heroes' Ascent.

It takes more physical coordination to play effectively in GW2. You have to constantly be moving whether you use keybinds or holding both mouse buttons. You also have 10 skills, plus special F1-4 buttons. Lets not forget the biggest game changer...dodging. You can't just stand there without the risk of getting hit. Then you gotta worry about rallying from downed state. So really it's a whole new ball of wax and it's understandable to be overwhelmed by it.

GW1 sucked and they specifically said  that GW2 was to be NOTHING like GW1 except for lore.  So you give your own hopes up by thinking it was gunna be the same or on par.  But really I'm glad GW2 isn't like GW1.  GW1 was a bad bad game.  GW2 is still VERY new and it'll take up to a year to get EVERYTHING up and running to how they want it.  Don't like it?  Go play another game.  And I find it funny how you talk about as if the whole GW1 community is disgusted with GW2 lol.  Where do you get your facts from?  Other then your mind..

I've yet to see one GW1 player saying competitive PvP in GW2 is better than in GW1. It's not.
And that whole E-Sport thing is bs.

Here's your first.

I hated pvp in GW1. I love it in GW2.

they REALLY need to bring back deathmatch.  It is the truest form of pvp, no bullshit proxied objectives where some classes may way over excel at others, just kill or be killed.

and GvG would be nice too, being able to have your own guild hall again...

So the game will be called Haste Wars 2?

Or Burst Wars 2?XD

Conquest is fine.

The problem is the lack of basic features.

No custom servers
No voice chat
No ladder
No observer mode

These are all features that 99% of video games release with today. It's not like we're asking for the moon. The PvP population is on its last legs and they need to do something about it fast.

Pretty much this, I was a pretty hardcore GvGer in GW1 (Tombs/HA was never competitive, more casual) and honestly in my opinion the PvP in GW2 is a lot of fun, the combat system is close to perfection, I was very skeptical about dodge rolling, no click to move and downed state but I have to say the gameplay is really really well done,

The only problems I have with the game besides the lack of features a competitive game needs is the small map pool and I would like other game modes than conquest to be explored a bit.

Any serious GvGer realises the problems this format had (VoD and Lord damage tiebreaker mainly), and as fun as it was back in the day, when people learned how to abuse the system what was left was a fairly dull game.

That would be all great, but the community is already torn apart.
GW2 turned out a massive disappointment, so all my friends abandoned it.
No point returning to GW1 unless everyone that was disappointed returns to it.

When people abandon something for something else, it's hard to get players back to it.
This counts for GW1, but also for GW2...

Well, then find another game.
Thankfully the industry does not cater specifically to you, so you will just have to accept the fact that it will take time and they won't always do things exactly the way you want them to do things.

If you prefer PvP in GW1 over GW2, then go back to GW1. Simple.
