Pretty much this. Just because you saw/engaged a mob first doesn't mean you get to call dibs on it. The entire game is designed around the fact that anyone can attack anything and be rewarded for it provided they make enough of a contribution. You can always run your personal story while severely underleveld/geared if you want to challenge yourself.

I've tried all that and still no go. When I inspected the properties of the file it had an 'Unblock' button alongside a notice saying the file had been blocked because it came from another computer. I clicked that as well but it's still not working.

Edit: Seems the AVG firewall is blocking it, despite me telling it not to. Stupid thing.

I was only poking fun hence the ;) on the end. And you do have the choice to spec for damage if you so wish. Whether the level of damage is acceptable to your or not is another matter. And we're probably still a few months away from launch and traits are very much still in flux, so you may get your wish by then.

Kinda surprised their doing it on the anniversary weekend but happy to definitely know when it is nonetheless.
