#2349256 What's Going to Happen to the Living Story?

Posted Cevilo on 31 January 2015 - 08:28 PM

I think LS would have been better received if they let us know earlier a Expac was being worked on and the LS was building up to it. before then it was a bunch of troll answers of "an Expansion isn't off the table" But for me personally if there was a light at the end of the tunnel it wouldn't have seemed like the LS was going so off topic with Scarlet or any of the other stuff they put.

I'm going to say I enjoyed the LS a lot more being away for all of part two and logging in once every 2 weeks to unlock the story for free, then played the entire 8 episodes leading into the expansion.

I think moving forward LS will be better received if people know at the end of ever few seasons an expac will drop with more features and flavor to it.

I just wish I could skip the atrocious dialogue in those cutscenes we are forced to sit through and talk to an NPC to get a text version of the story.

I know, I know, we gotta be all MMO2.0 nextgen but it's not any better than just reading quest text to me. Special place in my heart for LS achievements, they literally design them so you have to do the missions 2 or 3 times to get all of them.

What a bunch of losers lol 2015 and they can't do what GW1 had from the start: option to skip scenes. inb4 'it's not that easy'

The only Living Story episode that does not support skippable cutscenes is episode 7.  Everybody hates it, but they're fixing it, it's due to NPC relocation.  Then again, judging by your last sentence, you might need to google what that means and why it matters, it's more important than you think.

I had a brainwave this morning about this, actually. What if the living story returns after the expansion releases? What if it acts as a bridge to a new expansion? For example, Season 1/2 lead into Heart of Thorns - you just needed the main base game. What if Season 3/4 leads into the next expansion (only requiring the base game again). That way people are introduced to the new characters, can play the 'bridge' part at any time as long as they log-in or buy it from the gem store and that gives them an idea of what the expansion will involve. If I was at Arenanet, that's probably how I'd be planning it.

To be honest, this is what it seems to become in the long run.  This expansion was worked on for all the time the LS has been running, so I would not be surprised if, upon positive feedback, they keep this model.

Well, I'm excited! Especially considering the last patch and generally the entire season as a whole has been AWESOME.

The dragon boss has me peaked... I also see paths that head toward it.  It's giving me a marionette-ish vibe.

What I miss seeing is things like "show us your collections", "show us your titles", "funniest thing someone said in game", "how's the game treating you today?". You know, all those fun little threads people used to post regularly in. There's nothing to talk about when there's nothing that's fun, exciting, mystical, etc. I don't know, I just don't think GW2 is a lot to talk about.

There is plenty to talk about.  Guru lost that part of the population when this place became the gem store conspiracy hub.  All those people, including myself, migrated to the reddit.  You'll find those posts there.

Tyria's Point of No Return

A page was added to the official Guild Wars 2 website that outlined the future content of the Living Story, which re-launches on 4 November 2014.  The update also mentioned the next update will be Blood and Madness, a Halloween themed update, which will last from the the 21st of October until the 4th of November.

The page has since been removed, but the update information can be found below:

A Living World

The return of Living World Season 2 is rapidly approaching. When the season resumes on November 4, we’ll see the story pick up from the cliffhanger that left one of the world’s leaders fighting for survival, and the races of Tyria preparing for war against the Elder Dragon Mordremoth.

For Tyrians, the awakening of each of the previous elder dragons led to catastrophic world events: earthquakes, tidal waves, and the raising of a long sunken continent are just some examples of the destruction left in their wake. These have seared their marks into the face of Tyria.

Now another elder dragon stirs deep in the heart of the jungle. The world’s leaders have agreed to turn their attention to this new threat and attempt to destroy it before it can wreak the havoc they’ve seen other elder dragons sow. As season 2 returns, we turn our eyes towards Mordremoth as our next target. We also ponder the meaning of the vision given by the Pale Tree and the role that legends of Tyria’s past may play in a story that is yet to unfold.

Holiday Festivals

As we’ve done in the past, there will be festival releases interweaved into this coming Living World season. Let’s take a quick look at our festival calendar for the remainder of 2014.
This coming Tuesday, October 21, the Mad Realm returns with our annual Halloween release. On December 16, we’ll release our usual holiday-themed festivities with Wintersday. Both of these releases will feature the same content as last year but with refreshed rewards, giving you fun new festival-themed items to earn.

Into the Jungle

The road to war is paved by points of no return. Tyria has already decided to take the battle to Mordremoth. As we go on this journey we’ll learn dark secrets of Tyria’s past, venture into stories with roots deep in the very heart of Guild Wars lore, and visit places that have only been rumored to exist.

Season 2′s final episode will feature an unforgettable end for all of you who go on this journey with us. So make sure to jump in and join the ride starting on November 4.
We’ll see you in game!

yeah i started leveling a new char and then promptly got bored. the game is just so stale now. nothing new. its been out for so long and honestly there is no permanent changes new classes new weapons, spread the weapons to different classes. whatever is new seems pretty insubstantial.

That struck a cord with me.  A week or so ago, playing GW2 with my son, I realized my thief was level 78 and had been for a very, very long time.  The ridiculousness of it struck me, so I hopped in EotM and ran around for two levels.  Went and bought him exotic armor.  Transmuted to a look I liked.  Then couldn't think of anything I really wanted to do with him.

I've been seeing him in that decayed pirate armor on my log-in screen for so long, I thought, "Hey, now he'll look as good as the other characters."

Your line I quoted captured something I was feeling.  Like my last goal left is to have a row of nice dolls in completed outfits to look at on the log-in screen.

Pretty much all this.

#2332901 Is anyone else sick of Sylvari?

I dunno about GW2 lore as a whole but so far I enjoy the new living story. It also let us have that amazing, though easy fight with Zhaitan.

The dialogue between members of Destiny's Child/Edge 2.0 is a little too sappy for my taste and is something I hope subsides over time, but overall it is remarkable how much better the second season of the Living Story is compared to season one and the Personal Story. The Aerin fight was a lot of fun, and the Modrem Thrasher fight was quite a breath of fresh air pushing you to run heal/control skills over raw DPS.

Considering season one started with fixing signposts and ended with the Scarlet fight ... the starting point of season two bodes very well for this game's future.

Getting back to the OP, the problem with the Sylvari is similar because it also represents a dramatic change of flavor. In EOTN, the advent of the Sylvari was totally incidental, with Ronan finding the seeds and bringing one to Arbor Bay. The Pale Tree was nothing but an oddly shaped sapling, so now making it the heart of the cosmos, when we know perfectly well that everything existed before the seed was even planted, makes utterly no sense whatsoever. This is an even bigger issue than the ley lines, because it is directly contradictory with the prior data that we had.
Actually, looking back over this post from this morning, I just thought of a way that the writers could potentially reconcile the old lore and the new.

We know that the Pale Tree is not unique, as Ronan found multiple seeds in the cave, and Malyck is supposedly from a different tree. Various seeds mean that probably at least one tree existed before. So how about this: the parent tree of our current Pale Tree existed during the previous time that the dragons were awake, and in fact they were awake because of its existence.

Let's put the new lore of the Pale Tree and the ley lines into a package and say that the Pale Tree has the capacity to disturb or alter the flow of magic in the ley lines, and that the dragons have awoken now because the new Pale Tree disrupted the ley lines.

The Wyld Hunt Valiants fight the memory of a dragon before they awaken from the Dream, and are then told that their mission in life is to destroy the dragons. What if that is what the existence of these trees is all about: They are forces created by nature itself to counter the corruptive power of the dragons. They are able to manipulate the flow of magic in the ley lines and channel it into creating Sylvari, and thus the Sylvari cannot be corrupted because they are created with the same magic that the dragons need for sustenance.

Therefore the Pale Tree is not suddenly at the heart of the cosmos, but it is at the heart of this natural conflict with the dragons using the ley lines, and that is what we witness in Omadd's machine: The one large orb in conflict with the six smaller ones.

Obviously this still needs a little development, but it is just my idea for reconciling the lore.
